You're ready to go; new trainers, new workout clothes, and new gym membership. You are following the latest fitness trends, wether it be hot yoga, the latest Fitbit, or online classes such as cycling in a virtual race at home. All these modalities are fantastic and will help motivate you to get moving. But before you begin your journey don't forget these five forgotten foundations to ensure you don't stumble across any road blocks on your way.

Tip 1 : Consistency

Your body is cyclical in nature. You have a work routine, a family routine, a sleep routine. So it would make sense to organise the health of your body into a consistent routine. Training at the same time each day and same days each week will maximise your results. The same goes for burning fat, eat consistently and conscientiously each day and watch your goals become reality.

Tip 2: Accountability

Mothers always know what is best. "Make your bed", a mantra heard by most during their early childhood. This accountability (hopefully) helped you become a tidier and more conscientious adolescent. If left to your own demise, the beds of this planet would be unmade forever! Being able to trust yourself to give accurate feedback can be somewhat challenging when beginning a new program? Hiring a trainer or having a training partner can make all the difference in achieving your goals with direct and specific feedback that can be difficult to give to yourself.

Tip3: Patience

You don't pay off a mortgage in one year. A deposit is put down, and then monthly repayments begin. Many clients who begin a fitness program incorrectly, expect their goals to be reached within 12 weeks (that is your deposit). Theres nothing wrong with doing a 8-12 week challenge to kick things off, but you need to continue paying off the mortgage to reach your goals. Have patience and look 9-18 months down the road and focus on being consistent. You wouldn't miss 2-3 months of payments on your house so why would you on your own body!

Tip 4: Tracking/measuring

Anyone can sweat, but can anyone improve until they reach their full potential? Have you ever thought what is your body's full athletic potential? Feedback is key. What separates the best from good are small improvements. A great coach will track sessions, injuries, reps, sets, volume, tempo, rest, heart rate, energy systems, strength/endurance, mobility, and organise these metrics into a system to produce the best results for the client. If you are not tracking your improvement will eventually stall.

Tip 5: Purpose

Do you remember when you had a class in school that you despised and couldn't wait to leave? Setting an intent for a workout is just as important as what type of workout it is. Many people defeat themselves before even beginning their workouts. Unfocused and undisciplined workouts will lead to injuries, de-motivation, and even drop out completely. Make a conscious decision to bring your A game to the gym each time even if only for 30 minutes.

If you find yourself becoming frustrated with progress, come back to these tips and find which one is lagging in your workouts. The body is an amazing biological machine, do not allow a lazy mind interrupt your hard work. You'll be surprised to find that most time one of these basic fundamentals is all that i standing in your way to achieving your goals.
